A former member of the Hiking Club, Torin, was found dead this weekend. I never got to meet him, but many of the members were close friends of him. The Christmas dinner has been canceled, and they've been gathering to grieve. This is the mail that was sent out yesterday:
We're sure that most of you are aware of this by now, but it is with much sadness that we have to announce the passing of Torin Lakeman, hiker and friend to many. This is an incredibly hard day for all of us, but especially so for the family and close friends of Torin (many of whom are also members of the club) and our thoughts are with them today.
It is difficult to know what to say in these situations, but his
friends will recall how you would always get a smile from Torin. He
would happily strike up a conversation with a complete stranger, and
never seemed to enter a room without his trademark magnetic energy.
Aaron has probably summed him up with the words - "Torin was a true
light in our club."
A few of us will be meeting at Wetherspoons tonight from 7pm to support each other through this difficult time - please feel free to join us. If you feel like you need to talk to anybody about this, there are a whole number of organisations you can get in touch with.

The club will not be going ahead with our Christmas meal on Friday as
we don't feel that it is appropriate in this very sad week. We're sorry
to disappoint you, but we are sure that you will understand the reasons
behind this decision and full refunds will be arranged. We will not be
having an official social this week but will again be meeting for food
and drinks in Scholars from 7pm on Thursday for anybody who wants to.
The walk on Sunday will be going ahead as planned.
We hope that you are all taking this sad news as well as possible - please talk to us or somebody else if you feel like you need to.

The way everyone talks about him makes it clear that he was a great and funny guy. This is my way of paying respect to a fellow hiker, whom I wish I had gotten the chance to get to know.
